OpenDataDay at the University of Deusto

On 6 July, the DeustoTech-INTERNET research unit belonging to DeustoTech – Deusto Institute of Technology (http://www.morelab.deusto.es) organized in the Ingenio Hall of the Faculty of Engineering of the Univesity of Deusto, Open Data Day Bilbao 2012. 28 people attended to such event belonging to different universities (UDEUSTO, EHU and UPM), technological centers (CIC-TOURGUNE, TECNALIA, VICOMTECH-IK4) and companies (EJIE and GNOSS).

The event started with two interesting talks given by Oscar Corcho (http://mayor2.dia.fi.upm.es/oeg-upm/index.php/es/teachers/11-ocorcho) from UPM, Madrid and Juan Sequeda (http://www.cs.utexas.edu/~jsequeda/) from the University of Texas, USA. Oscar Corcho gave a short tutorial on Linked Data, its principles and applicability. Juan Sequeda explored how to serialize in an scalable manner Linked Data on relational database management systems.

After the talks, the attendants constituted three work teams in order to give place to three new datasets: a) Urban waste in Bizkaia, b) Accessibility and points of interest in Basque cities and c) Basque culture data (Hedatuz) linkage to bibliographic resources VIAF. The results of all of these experiences were published at: http://opendataday.deusto.es

Future Internet Assembly, Poznan, 25-26.10.2011

The European Future Internet Assembly (FIA), is a collaboration between projects that have recognised the need to strengthen European activities on the Future Internet to maintain European competitiveness in the global marketplace. FIA events are organised twice a year as a conference where people from the different research domains meet each other and discuss cross cutting research results and trends in an interactive manner.

Currently FIA brings together around 150 research projects that are part of Challenge 1 of the ICT programme of 7th Framework Programme. These projects are advancing the state of the art in: The network of the future, Cloud Computing, Internet of Services and Advanced Software Engineering, Internet-connected objects, Trustworthy ICT, Networked Media and Search Systems, Socio-economic considerations for the Future Internet, Application domains for the Future Internet, Future Internet Research and Experimentation.

FIA is open to all researchers engaged in Future Internet research to contribute and participate towards FIA’s goals.

The Future Internet Assembly will be held in Poznan, Poland on 25-26 October 2011. The FIA is part of the Future Internet Week in Poznan (24-28 October 2011) that includes a large number of adjucent events, such as the ServiceWave conference, the FIRE event, the Future Internet Forum, the Internet of Things conference and many more.

XV meeting of FTF (Future Trend Forum) about the “Internet of things”

The past 26th of May the XV meeting of FTF (Future Trend Forum) took place in Madrid with  the Bankinter Innovation Foundation and the colaboation of Accenture.

The conferences were full due to the interest of the subject and took place from the hand of Mr. Paul Horn Distinguished Scientist by the University of New York and former IBM Senior Vice President and Executive Director of Research, we invite you to discover the internet of things

In the conferences, the last publication of the forum of international experts of Bankinter Innovation Foundation was presented: “The Internet of  Things: in a world connected of intelligent objetcs”. This publication is available in Spanish in the next link:

http://www.fundacionbankinter.org/es/conferences/madrid-internet-of-things

The experts of the FFT of the Bankinter Foundation consider that, in the same way the XIX century was the scenario of Industrial revolution and XX century was the witness of Information Revolution, in brief we will assist to the revolution caused by the Internet of Things. Between the applications that use this technology, the outstanding ones are those related to: vigilance of people health by biosensors, remote activation of electrical appliances to optimize their use, “smart” electrical power networks able to detect voltage surges and redirect the electricity through alternative paths to minimize power cuts, paying in supermarkets without queuing in the checkout, smart cars that recognize traffic jams, automatic control of the optimum time for harvesting, etc.

According to the experts of the Foundation, the fact that every object could become a source of data, and that enterprises and organizations know everyday better the behavior of their customers, will bring a radical change in the way of doing business, in the organization of the public sector and even in the daily life of millions of people.

The irruption of the Internet of Things has been possible thanks to the conjunction of three factors that have made it possible to use by the costumer: the miniaturization of the hardware, the overcoming of the limitation of the infrastructure (the combination of the mobile phone use, wifi connection and optical fiber has made it possible to overcome the problem of the mobile phones’ infrastructures’ saturation) and the creation of new applications and services.

With the Internet of Things, a world 2.0 appears in sight, in which immediacy and automatisms predominate, and that will have a profound impact on society and business. Among other things, it will be the base for new products and services that will be designed based on ubiquity and with a high component of innovation. These services will have their impact, for example, on consumers, to which the possibility of looking up the characteristics and evaluations of products will give them an unprecedented power, as well as the optimization of connected objects and source consumption, which will mean a big step forward as an investment in sustainable development.
